A little Amsterdam night music

Courtesy of PhotoBucket....

You're looking out of my 4th Floor Hostel window up the street across Prinsengracht Canal. It's about 4:30 in the morning when it's the only time trucks can make deliveries. The lights inside the LUST sign [pic below] are off. In the L foreground is a charming little antique lamp shop at 563 Prinsengracht whose lights stay on all night.

This is the same POV, earlier the previous afternoon. There was a big dialog in my LJ about what kind of shop LUST was, it's a unique sign and you can see it all up and down the street. It turned out to be a high-end restaurant and one of the employees was Ineke, the daughter of a Performing Arts Center production manager in Alkmaar, up the coast. Good convos, good eats. And drinks!

Down on the bridge across the canal. This is the smallest bike I saw during my whole trip, it was totally cute. And it was lovingly chained to the canal rail right between its parents'. Training wheels. It stayed right there a couple of days, lots of time to go retrieve my cam. Traffic rules in the city give first place right-of-way to bikes. If you're walking you gotta pay attention or else you will be smushed. Even trucks and buses are outranked by bikes. Bikes even have right-of-way on turns, too, it's amazing the maneuvers they pull off. Somehow bike riders know how to avoid one another, too....by an eyelash or two.

Boy I miss all this. Wonder if they are getting ready for Halloween just now...

Love it. And it was a place of joy, too.

Not too many places on the other side of the world you walk into and feel a good vibe. This was one of them for me.

OMG I *love* those shots. The bike is too charming for words.

Yeahhh ... especially since I never saw that little an owner - rider actually in action :) There's a big thing about putting kids in front baskets, putting them in rear ones so they hold on to the parent-rider's back --- and even special bikes with long wooden tubs built onto their front frames to carry several members of a class at once! I also especially liked how carefully [tenderly?] it was parked. I took another shot when here came this humongous delivery truck and parked halfways up on the sidewalk behind it, {illegally]: loved the contrast, will post that soonish.

Bikes outrank everything? That's pretty interesting.

And I like that night shot -- I like the motion in it.
