a handful of seeds

It is a furnace.
The July heat seeps through my skin, between the strands of my hair, around my eyelids.

Eyes shut to the summer sun, I see red: destruction of the first and second great temples in Jerusalem, for which I am supposedly in mourning.
For lives and lifeways that no longer exist.

I am chopping onions when you ring my doorbell, tears streaming down my face.
I answer the door, still holding my chopping knife.

You offer me a pomegranate and take my knife, then you carefully slice the crimson fruit in two. You offer me a handful of seeds : I close my still-stinging eyes and you tilt back my head. I pour the seeds onto my tongue and bite down.

The seeds of the new fruit, thin skins yielding, burst in my mouth.
You are more familiar than last year, and ten times as sweet.

I'm the author. I'm glad you enjoyed the story, but actually, I'd prefer if you took my full name off of your journal - I just generally like to keep tabs on what people can find online when they google me!

Here's something else I wrote that's available online - format's a little screwy though. http://www.rambleunderground.org/underground_summer06_005.htm Enjoy!

I just took all the identifying tags off the post as well, but my journal access is set to "public" so: do you want me to take this message and yours off it also?

*goes off to ramble underground* thank you lots !!

Re: Darya
Darya, you've given me a beautiful, spices - and - sympathy gift.

Your words just flowed in their own orange swish around my heart to illumine my own gallery of images far far outside of time ...

Please forgive my journal-posting this reply, it's the only way I can talk to thank you, and I'll delete this also, if you wish ...
