Angie

Angie is a 1994 film by Martha Coolidge starring Geena Davis, Aida Turturro, Stephen Rea, Michael Rispoli, and features reallyreally good early acting from James Gandolfini, before he became famous in his lead role on the TV series "The Sopranos" as Tony Soprano.

What I find most awesome in the beginning of this film is the scene where two eleven-year-old girls are hanging out with friends on their front stoop in their hood in NYC discussing, among other things, how their bodies will look when they grow up --- as they do so, two young women walk down the street and pass right in front of them: they are the little kids suddenly now age 24, 13 years later. The kids are awestruck, totally flustered, and the 24-year-old Angie gives the 11-year-old Angie a big smile. Then the 24-year-olders cross the street and we follow their stories.

Tremendous timeTravel.

Angie (24) goes through her life, has an affair, her affair-mate (male) takes her to a ballet superbly staged by Michael Smuin (SF Ballet 1973-85) and starring American Ballet Theatre members Susan Jaffe, Jeremy Collins, and Joffrey Ballet star Robert Conn. It's Angie's first time at a live ballet performance and she loves it in a somewhat bewildered way.

Davis (21 January 1956) had already won an Oscar at 33 for her work in The Accidental Tourist and you probably know her from her portrayal with Susan Sarandon in Thelma and Louise (Oscar nomination, 1992).

All these are worth a look.

I just posted over in KIOTA, referring to the film at the end of that post:
