all turns to silver glass

Peter Jackson is the Australian writer-director who created the adaptation of Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings", a fantasy, and made an international hit film out of it. Three films, in fact.

With characters such as Frodo, Eowyn, Gandalf, and many others.

Jackson disagreed with Tolkien, who said his tale was about death.

Jackson said, "Ultimately it is a story of hope."

Gandalf is the wise old philosopher and guide, who says:

"All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you."

No, the journey doesn't end here.
Death is just another path, one that we all must take.
The grey rain curtain of this world rolls back and all turns to silver glass and then you see it... white shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise."

The singer Annie Lennox co-wrote a song, "Into the West". It underscores the end credits of the film, and she sings these lines:

"...you and I will meet again,
and you'll be here
in my arms, just sleeping..."

This month a year ago, Eva Markvoort died in Canada. This past weekend, Lois Pechony-Levy died in Israel. Eva was not quite 26, Lois just past 28. Both had inherited the mortal pulmonary disease cystic fibrosis, and both were waiting for replacement lungs, transplants which did not come in time [or at all.]

Eva and I talked online about theatre stuff, as she was an actress [stage and a biofilm] and a makeup artist. Lois and I talked online a lot, about our friend kiota, and then I met Lois irl and spent an afternoon with her in her hospital in Ein Kerem when I visited Israel.

One of the things that Eva often said, that really lives outside of the destructions of time, is this:

"I will live forever in the hearts of those who love me."

So that is up to us who remain here for a longer time. Where we direct our hearts and whom we keep closely held within them.

Eva's LJ UserID is "65redroses" which is a close rendering of how children verbalize "cystic fibrosis". Lois' is "lotus82".

Eva said once that her fundraising for CF research to combat the disease wasn't really about money at all. It was about raising consciousness of the plight of all those who are trying to live without being able to breathe well enough to support life. Of course people can contribute through the CF website or through their local CF group [as I do], and/or in any non-monetary way they're comfortable with. Perhaps by the support of words or poems, or simply by where they place their attention.

Another line in Jackson's adaptation is a consolation to Princess Eowyn:
"I would have you smile again, not grieve for those whose time has come. You shall live to see these days renewed. No more despair."

Ultimately, yes it IS a story of hope. Millions of them, actually...

All turns to silver glass. The darkness and your grey rain curtains are held at bay when you light a candle and carry it, as Jessica is doing in my icon.

No, the journey doesn't end here.

Not kiota's, nor Eva's, nor Lois'.

Not theirs. Not ours.

I can't believe Lois is gone.

I believe that she asks us to walk on the bridge with her, to make the change -- from sharing with her while she was here -- to opening to a new relationship with her now that she's gone.

Very tough change to make. But worth so much, as far as we're given the grace to do that...

Just as kiota is, I believe she wants us to stay close in whatever ways we can. She's as near to us as our love for her.

And *that* does not have to go away at all.

I missed this when you posted it originally. It never ceases to amaze me how many friends in passing I have that you know. Somehow our lives are interlinked even in a small sense and I find that comforting somehow.

Me too, rogue!
And sometimes I think the interlinking is -not- in any sense small at all. At times we are blessed to see the connections...
