IJS KOUDE

...as in Ice Cold.

There is a newspaper here called De Telegraaf [The Telegraph] and I think it has Amsterdam and Rotterdam editions too. BRRRR WAT LEKKER was on the front page yesterday. With a lot of pictures:

The biggest photo runs in that front page spot to sell more De Telegraafs, I imagine. Perhaps she is writing her Master's Thesis on Hypothermia or maybe Architectural Suspension Challenges. I bet it was far more common to see the look on that dude at the top right, getting splashed with Vintage North Sea New Year's water... wearing his thick coat, indeed. Under him are a couple of dudes in their UNOX hats and strapped-on... uhm... fairy ice-wings? Shark fins? Down for the last dive? I think the only smart one is the piggie on the bottom, who of course is totally nude but well-insulated enough to take it. Wonder why he is not wearing his soup hat. [Maybe he's already snarfed down a couple of troughs of the stuff, that's why he's smiling?]

BRRRR of course is international, and LEKKER also means alluring or enticing or tasty or tempting... besides 'pleasant'. Roughly: "Brrrr, what temptation?"

Med services to the rescue:

They are here on my red towel for warmth, cut from the same first page, Miss Buoyancy is smiling at them. She is also running pretty fast. Maybe she needs medical attention from that cute doctor, or more soup. Or both.

It was NOT ijs-koude in the City Hall this noon. Last night this huge party happened with two stages, all over the floor [guessing one stage was 120 feet / 40 meters wide] and lots of heat, for all the high-society people in town [didn't get invited, imagine!]. Today they were striking [taking it all down] and the crew chief was excited I was from America, and in theatre, and wanted to take pictures of them doing what I had been doing for a long time. This is from the stairwell-balcony level looking at all the lighting trusses [silver triangle thingies]:

Those trusses had been pre-loaded with lights and electronic switching gear, and then had been elevated to the tops of several booms [towers] using chains and winch drives. When I told some of the crew about my various 7-meter / 23-foot ladder experiences, one said "We put the Germans up on top of there and then kick the towers!" I think he was kidding?

You're looking at maybe 30 feet in the air [~10 meters]. Anyway. Usually the crew would do this after the party is over, but they all went home and slept through the party instead, getting ready for this morning. Very much like America.

All that beach fancydancing was happening at a temp of 0 or 1 [32 or 33.8 F] with a windchill. There was IJS on the sides of the canal out my window this morning, it had grown overnight and pissed off the ducks and swans, they were PRIKKELHEIDBAR [annoyed]. And tonight it goes down to -9 [+15.8 F].

I know this is a heat wave to lots of you [except if you're in Israel], but consider an air temp of 16 degrees F *plus* a North Sea "breeze" coming at you from only a few blocks away? Bring your red towel and electric blankets and GROTE / great ... soup bowl. Bikinis are out until 1.1.2010 :)

Brrr is right. But it sounds like so much fun. I'd do it, and even submerge myself fully.

Of course you would ;) Look at the winters you are going through now, you are totally winterized !! If you were here, you would laugh at everybody shivering just at the thought!

It *is* so much fun, seems like there's also a race to see who can stay in the water with the least amount of their body for the shortest time, and still earn their soup.

I would throw you a lifeline and applaud from my boat [from inside my electric blankets] ... I know, you would just poke your head through the ice shelf and laugh louder... probably when you caught my line you would pull me in too :)

Now that I have all of 2009 to get mentally up for this...

I've just found out that UNOX also makes:
Cream of Broccoli
French Asparagus Cream
Chinese Tomato
Brown Bean
and Cream of Leek, too.

Poot. Should have tested at least one toe in there.
