Giving is whatever you can actually do

I think it doesn't appear in the Diary but in one of her pieces in the Story volume. Anne Frank talks about sharing a pastry from one of the sweet shops in Amsterdam when she was eleven or so, and reflects on being poor. Although Anne herself was solidly middle-class, her dad was a successful businessman in wholesale food manufacturing and vending, continuing even after the German occupation.

One thing she said was, "Who among us is so poor that she can't give someone a smile?"

Or words directly to that effect.

This morning Meow wrote a beautiful meditation expanding on this same idea. My post title is a quote from her. Since she made hers a public post, I'd like to link you to it

This resonated with me today because I remember, although I didn't have any food to give her, opening an outside restaurant door for a very cold street cat last week; she was trying to figure out how to get safely inside where it was warmer [hours before the place opened].

And this morning I gave away my Obama winter cap to one of my roommmates [from Acapulco] who was totally totally overjoyed ---- and that suprised me completely. (I held tightly onto my Dutch one with the earflaps!) He felt he needed to respond in some way, so he gave me a one-peso piece which he said was made out of silver and gold. Still figuring out how I feel about that.

So.

Besides linking you, I want to send you all a smile :)

Blessings Be.
